Elementary School Curriculum

Mathematics
Consistent with our mission to implement a curriculum that serves diverse thinkers and learners, Citizens of the World KC uses the Everyday Mathematics curriculum in grades K-5. Developed by The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project, Everyday Mathematics is aligned with the Missouri Learning Standards for Mathematics and helps students achieve true mastery by continually reinforcing math concepts through concrete real-world applications and well planned lessons that build upon each other, from simple to complex. Everyday Mathematics introduces each mathematical concept through various learning experiences, including games and puzzles, but more powerfully, projects using real life mathematical information such as measurements, financial calculations, and graphs of data collected by the students themselves. These experiences allow students to both create understanding of mathematics as well as develop an understanding of themselves as learners.

English Language Arts
The hallmark of our English Language Arts program is the implementation of a smaller, mixed-age group taking part in leveled reading instruction across the elementary years. Reading teachers utilize curricular materials including the Lucy Calkins Readers’ Workshop approach, Fountas and Pinnell’s Continuum of Literacy Learning, and more. Our teachers provide dynamic, targeted instruction to small groups of students to support early literacy to emerging readers, meeting each child at their current level and moving them forward with a balanced approach to developing technical reading skills, reading for learning across the curriculum, and a nuanced appreciation for and understanding of uses of the written word in different genres.

Integrated Projects
Drawing on the skills and content from English language arts and mathematics, and combining with the Missouri Learning Standards in science and social studies, integrated projects enable meaningful learning through life-based, active projects that allow children to experience learning within a real world context. Emphasizing the skills of cooperation, collaboration, communications, problem solving, planning, reflection, and perseverance, these learning experiences are frequently driven by student interests and questions, allowing students to engage in investigations that bring about deeper understanding of thematic concepts and the big ideas that guide each grade level’s projects.
